The Bibby family of Flint – Millers
Please see the Bibbys of Flint family Tree
When I was researching our Bibby family of Liverpool, I came across a further two Alexander Bibbys that were also millers, but of Flint, Wales.
I found the will of this first Alexander and this has subsequently helped me piece this tree together:
Alexander Bibby born about 1730 was miller of Flint Mill in the township of Coleshill Fawr. The only Alexander that appears likely to be him is one baptised on 22nd March, 1723 at Chorley, the son of Richard Bibby, Miller and Elizabeth.
He married Sarah Jackson on 1st July, 1753 at Great Neston. Coincidently, that this was where Alexander Bibby, son of James Bibby, Miller of Childwall was baptized in the same year. Does this link the families? For instance, could James and this Alexander be related? Alexander and Sarah had the following children 1,2 :
Thomas Bibby b 1754 m 23.5.1779 Flint to Elizabeth Williams bur 3.6.1825 (will dated 25.4.1825)
Peter Bibby b 15.2.1756 Flint bur 1.3.1757 Flint Peter Bibby b 28.10.1757 Flint bur 6.4.1786 Flint Richard Bibby bp 28.4.1759 Flint m 6.8.1780 Flint to Jane Williams bur 18.4.1826 Flint
Alexander Bibby b abt 1760 m 3.7.1802 Flint to Margaret Davis bur 8.4.1808 Flint (will dated 2.4.1808) George Bibby b Flint Mill, bp 25.6.1764 Flint m 1.2.1793 St Asaph, Flint to Margaret Jones d 1803 St Asaph 6
Christopher Bibby (Miller/boatman) bp 24.4.1768 Flint m 11.6.1791 Holywell to Elizabeth Ingleby bur 13.9.1799 Flint
Alexander was Bailiff of Flint in 1784 8 . He died in 1794 and was buried on 1st June at Flint 2. He left a will dated 27th Feb 1793 that was proved on 3rd Nov 17951. Alexander made no mention of his wife therefore suggesting that she must have died before 1793. The only burial I can find is for an infant Sarah Bibby on 30 March, 1792 2. Alexander was in possession of coal mines and collieries in and around Flint which explains why three of his sons were coal merchants! He names his four sons Thomas, Richard, Alexander and Christopher but not George. George Bibby, another son, married Margaret Jones on 1st Feb 1793 at St Asaph, Flint 4 . He was a grocer and died in St. Asaph in 1803 6. Did he fall out of favour with his father?
The majority of his estate went to his son Alexander who was his sole executor. The coal mines and collieries were split equally between all four sons (apart from George). He also mentions a granddaughter Lucy Bibby, also a witness to the will 1. Lucy appears to have been born in 1778, baptised at Heswall on 5th November and was the daughter of John Bibby and Hannah Jackson 5 (not married). She was buried in Flint on 3rd December 1796 4 . However, Alexander did not appear to have had a son called John. Therefore, this is a little confusing.
Thomas Bibby, born in 1754 was a joiner and coal merchant. He married Elizabeth Williams on 23rd May, 1779 at St. Mary’s Flint 2. The had seven children all baptised at St Mary’s Flint 2:
Thomas Conway Bibby bp 5.3.1780 Flint m 7.11.1802 Chester to Sara Hughes 5
John Bibby bp 27.1.1782 Flint m 2.9.1812 St. Mary on the Hill, Chester to Catherine Hughes bur 19.7.1827 Flint Alexander Bibby bp 9.10.1795 Flint bur 4.6.1796 Flint Elizabeth Bibby bp 10.6.1787 Flint m 5.1.1809 Flint to Thomas Davis Ann Bibby bp 22.8.1789 Flint
Alexander Bibby bp 17.7.1791 Flint m 15.8.1822 St. Mary on the Hill, Chester to Sarah Price 5 bur 13.2.1826 Flint age 34 Peter Bibby bp 1.4.1793 Flint m 26.7.1821 St. Mary on the Hill, Chester to Elizabeth Lloyd 5 d 1850
Elizabeth was buried on 8th July, 1812 at Flint and Thomas died in 1825 aged 71 and was buried on 3rd June in Flint. He left a will dated 25th April, 1825, proved on 28th December in which his son John was executor and all his children were mentioned.
Richard Bibby born in 1759 was a grocer and a coal merchant. He married Jane Williams on 6th August, 1780 at Flint and they subsequently had 8 children at Flint 2 :
Elizabeth Bibby bp 10.6.1781 Flint Sarah Bibby bp 6.7.1783 Flint Richard Bibby bp 11.8.1785 Flint m 18.11.1804 Flint to Ann Davis Jane Bibby bp 5.10.1788 Flint bur 5.11.1712 Flint Mary Bibby bp 12.11.1791 Flint bur 17.11.1792 Flint William Bibby bp 26.1.1794 Flint bur 2.10.1794 Flint William Bibby bp 3.7.1796 Flint bur 5.4.1799 Flint Jane Bibby bp 16.3.1799 Flint
Jane died in 1808 and was buried on 16th April at Flint. Richard died aged 67 in 1826 and was buried on 18th April also at Flint.
Richard Bibby was the eldest son of Richard and Jane, born in 1785. He married Ann Davis on 18th November, 1804 at Flint and they had 5 children in Flint and subsequently four children in Liverpool. It appears that Richard was a miller at the time of his daughter Jane‘s baptism in St Mary, Flint on 10th March, 1813 where they were living at Holywell 2 . They moved to Clayton Street, Liverpool at some point between then and 11th May, 1818 when son Richard George Bibby was baptised (in Liverpool St Nicholas) 5. By 1825 Richard was a joiner.
Alexander Bibby was born in around 1760 (no baptism can be found) and succeeded his father as Miller of Flint Mill, being the sole executor of his will. He was also Bailiff of Flint in 1792 8. He married Margaret Davis on 3rd July, 1802. They appear to have married quite late in life, she a spinster and he a bachelor, therefore had no previous marriages. Moreover, it appears that had no children. Alexander died on 5th April 1808 and was buried in Flint on 8th of April. He left a will dated 2nd April 1808 which was proved in 1810 in which he mentions no children and left his estate entirely to his wife Margaret 7.
Christopher Bibby, the youngest son of Alexander and Sarah was a born in 1768. He was a miller, Coal merchant and Boatman. He married Elizabeth Ingleby on 11th June 1791 at Flint and they had five children 2
Harriet Bibby bp 30.6.1792 Flint Mary Bibby bp 3.8.1793 Flint
Elizabeth Bibby bp 18.1.1795 Flint
Ann Bibby bp 21.9.1796 Neston
Christopher Bibby bp 17.6.1798 Flint bur 5.3.1799 Flint
Christopher died in 1798 and was buried at Flint on 13th September 2. He was noted as a boatman in his Admon that is dated 4th October, 1798 6 .
