Dellor is quite a rare name and although most of our branch is spelt with the “or” spelling rather than  the “er” spelling, they can be interchangeable, especially the further back you go.  I must thank Ralph Dellor for his help and encouragement together with his cousins Roger Dellor, Mavis and Mary and their parents George and Iris,  Alison Howard and Sandie Dellor who have all contributed their stories, photos etc. Thanks also to Roger for the photos of John Thomas and Ann Marie.

The Dellor family appears to have originated in Hertfordshire. The head of the family tree at present is likely to be James Dellor, labourer, born abt 1739.  He married Martha Hare on 29th October, 1770 at Welwyn.   We know from the 1851 census now, that our Thomas Dellor was born at Welwyn in abt 1786, and it seems likely that he was their son, partly because they are the only Deller/or family in Welwyn at the time but also due to the fact that Thomas named a daughter Martha.

We therefore, have the following children of James and Martha 1:

Ann Deller bp 16.12.1770 Welwyn
Thomas Dellor bp 22.6.1781 Welwyn                                                                                                                                                                                                               bur 4.8.1782 Welwyn
Thomas Dellor (Gardener) bp 25.1.1784 Welwyn                                                                                                                                                                                                              m 3.11.1812 West Bradenham to Eliza Ward                                                                                                                                                         d 15.11.1855 Hadley

There is a James Dellor on the Hertfordshire Militia list for years 1769 – 1782 2.  According to the list he had 3 children by 1782, so there are likely to be at least one more child born that I have not found.   Martha was buried on 7th November, 1813 aged 64 and James was buried on 27th December, 1818  at Welwyn St Mary aged 79 1,3

Thomas Dellor, born in 1764 married Eliza Ward of Necton, Norfolk (daughter of William Ward, plumber, painter and Sarah Ransome –  the three birth records, below all state Eliza was the daughter of William Ward ) on 3rd November, 1813 at West Bradenham, Norfolk 9Thomas and Eliza had three children that we know of (found in Dr. William’s Library of Non-Conformist registers) 4 although it is likely that they had other children in the six years after they married:

Thomas was a head gardener living at Hadley near Barnet in 1855 when he died.  He died on 15th November, 1855 5.  His daughter Martha Dellor was present at his death. According to Thomas’ death certificate, he was 69 when he died in 1855 so that he would have been born abt 1786.  Another Thomas Dellor was buried at Monken Hadley on 9th December, 1846 aged 70.  It is not yet known if he is related. Eliza died on 23rd December, 1864 aged 72 at Hadley 5, where she had been living at the time of the 1861 census as a laundress with her daughter Maria 6

Their eldest daughter, Eliza Dellor, married William Austin Anstee, a master butcher from Elstree in 1838. They lived in Hadley Green and had a daughter Eliza Georgina in 1840.  Eliza died in 1859 and William Anstee remarried Caroline Curtis in 1861. Georgina was living with her father and Caroline in the 1861 census but appears to have married Frederick Milton in 1864 7.  Sadly, however, it also appears that Georgina died aged only 27 in 1867 at Barnet 7.

Jonathan Dellor, only son of  Thomas Dellor and Eliza Ward, born in 1820, joined the Metropolitan police force where he was a police constable in the ‘T’ Division from 1840 to 1857. He married Maria Lingwood, daughter of William Lingwood and Sarah Boultard, on 8th November, 1843 at Heston.
He had one son, (although according to the 1871 Census, also a daughter – Maria but no other evidence can be found about her).

John Thomas Dellor born 3rd May, 1844 at Cranford Bridge, Hounslow, bp 28 May 1844 Holy Trinity Chapel, Hounslow                                                               m 9.9.1866 Islington to Ann Marie Carter
d 3.12.1903 The Star Inn, Barnet
[Maria Dellor born 1846 at Hanwell ??,m ? to ?? Fukeney ??] – no evidence other than the 1871 census entry.

Jonathan retired from the Met on 1857 due to rheumatism and lived in the East Barnet area until his death in 1875. At the time of the 1871 census he was living at East Barnet with his wife Maria, a 25 year old married “daughter” Maria Fakeney and niece Maria Mathews. However, there is no other evidence that suggests that this Maria was a real daughter. No birth can be found and she is not present on the 1851 or 1861 censuses. She may have been adopted. There are also very few instances of the name Fakeney so I have nothing to go on. The niece Maria Matthews was the daughter of Maria’s sister Fanny Lingwood and her first husband Daniel Matthews

Thomas and Eliza’s youngest daughter Martha Dellor, born 1827 married Nathan Prior in 1869 at Barnet 7. he was a book agent 6.  They had no children. Nathan died in 1893 so it seems strange that in the 1891 census Martha is recorded as being a widow already. she died in 1902, in Hackney.

John Thomas Dellor, my great grandfather and the only son of Jonathan and Maria, was born at Cranford Bridge in 1844.  The family are  found on the 1851 census living at Gore Lane Police Section at Westminster 6.   At this time there was no sign of siblings.   In 1861 the three of them were living at Hadley Common, Monken Hadley near Barnet where Jonathan was retired from the police force and working as a gardener and John Thomas was a butcher.  He married Ann Marie Carter, daughter of William Carter and Caroline Cato, on 9th September 1866 at Islington 5. By 1881, John Thomas was living at 87 Andover Road, Islington,  a butcher. He and Maria had nine (or possibly ten) children, gleaned mainly from the 1871 – 1891 censuses 6 and parish records on ancestry 10:

Anyone living in Barnet may recognise the name of Dellor’s Close, opposite Bell’s Hill cemetery. Although, as yet, I have failed to find hard evidence, the family tale is that John Thomas owned farmland and built cottages on what is now Dellor’s Close.  I have been able to locate him as a butcher in Barnet. Certainly some members of his family are buried at Bell’s Hill, but so far, no other document can place him in the area. The other rumour that does have hard evidence is that John Thomas also owned race horses. Thanks to George and Iris, I have seen snippets from the Racing Calender that show horses owned by John Dellor and one ridden by his son Ernest. Some newspaper snippets include mentions of Mr John Dellor’s horses; Dread at Hurst Park Meeting in 1899 and Abberton at the Hertfordshire Handicap in 1898.
In 1901 John Thomas and his family were living at 75 Chatsworth Road, Hackney. He died suddenly on 3rd December, 1903 at the ‘Star’ Public House in Barnet. Annie died on 2nd July, 1925.

Thanks to them I now have photos of Horace and Florence (see Dellor photo Page).  It is thought that William John  went to live in America at some time in the early 1900s, leaving Florence, his wife at home with the children. Also thanks to Sandie Dellor who has given me further information on Stanley Edward and his family.]

Dellor Family

Rose Alma Dellor (1876 – 1952)

Rose Alma Dellor, born 1876 at 100 Andover Road, Islington 5. She married James Williamson Howard, a Fireman on 16th August 1898 at Clerkenwell, apparently against her father’s wishes. My grandfather, Alfred James George Howard was their eldest son born 1899. Please see the Howard page for information about her family.

Rose, opposite, was widowed in 1938 and lived with her daughter in Prittlewell and then Westcliffe on Sea until her death in 1952. She remained close to her sisters Lily and Mabel (known as Auntie May) but appeared to have lost all touch with her brothers. In fact, there was a time when my mum didn’t even know she had had any brothers!

In 1901 Ernest was living at 44 St. Paul’s Road, Islington with his brother John, both butchers 6. I think it was about this time that Ernest was riding his father’s horse.  They were lodging with David Diss and his family. Ernest died on 25th November, 1950 at Barnet, aged 73.  He was also buried at Bell’s Hill cemetery, with his wife Emma Maria who died in 1943.

DNA Match

I have had a DNA match with a 2nd cousin 1x removed which had confused me.  The match was with a daughter of Lilian Dellor, but not our Florence Lily.  There are two separate ladies:  Lily and Lilian are both on the 1939 register. So the match must be from a little further back in the tree – I am working on it!

  • Hi Dellor relatives! To cut a long story short, I’m working with Hackney Historic Buildings Trust on a project about Lower Clapton’s heritage. We’ve got Now and Then photography workshops with local young people and would love to use the photo of the Dellor butcher’s shop in Chatsworth road in this and resultant exhibition. Would it be possible to get a higher resolution image?

Thanks and happy to provide further information.
